Journal STEM CELLS Awards Pioneering Research into Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency

A young scientist who led research into the use of stem cells from hair follicles to treat the ocular surface disease has been named the winner of the Young Investigator Award by the journal STEM CELLS.

Dr. Ewa Meyer-Blazejewska will be presented with her award at The Stem Cell Symposium, hosted by the University of Kragujevac in Serbia on October 15, 2011. The $10,000 prize is awarded annually to a young scientist whose paper has been judged to be of worldwide significance by a global jury.

Dr. Meyer-Blazejewska, from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) won the award for her research into Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), a condition which causes the cornea to become cloudy and develop a rough surface causing pain and leading to blindness.

Currently, treatments focus on harvesting limbal cells from a patient’s healthy eye or from cadaveric tissue. In her pioneering research, Dr. Meyer-Blazejewska considered the potential use of stem cells harvested from hair follicles to reconstruct damaged tissue for patients who suffer from LSCD in both eyes.

A stem cell research study showing that Adult Stem Cells taken from a patient’s fat and then implanted back into that patient, helps improve their Multiple Sclerosis. The research study documented 3 case studies of Multiple Sclerosis patients.

Case Studies of Multiple Sclerosis Patients Implanted with Fat Stem Cells

Case Study #1- 50 year old man with Relapse-remitting MS:

Before the Stem Cell Therapy:

  • Multiple Seizures
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Significant Memory Loss
  • Taking Multiple Medications- Solu-Medrol, Baclofen,
Provigil, Tegretol, Trileptal, Tysabri, Vitamins, Omega-3 and Zanaflex

After the Fat Stem Cells were implanted:

  • No more seizures
  • Improved Sexual Function
  • Improved Memory
  • OFF ALL MEDICATIONS

Case Study #2- 32 year old man with Relapsing-remitting MS

This patient reported after the stem cell therapy and treatment that he now has:

  1. Better Balance and Coordination
  2. His Depression is gone
  3. Significantly improved overall condition

Debate Rages Over Stem Cell Research

OKLAHOMA CITY — The debate over stem cell research stirs up deeply held religious, moral and ethical views.
But some aren’t sure what a possible ban or veto will mean for Oklahoma.
Cells tinier than a pin head have some asking larger-than-life questions.

House Bill 1326 would criminalize research that would destroy or cause substantial risk to a human embryo.
The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation reports this type of research isn’t even happening in the state right now.

The foundation is doing research on adult stem cells but not embryonic.
But its workers say no one knows what the medical landscape will look like in five or 10 years. And they don’t believe research should be cut off if it could lead to life-saving innovations in the future.

Precision with Stem Cells a Step Forward for Treating Multiple Sclerosis

Scientists have improved upon their own previous world-best efforts to pluck out just the right stem cells to address the brain problem at the core of multiple sclerosis and a large number of rare, fatal children’s diseases.

Details of how scientists isolated and directed stem cells from the human brain to become oligodendrocytes – the type of brain cell that makes myelin, a crucial fatty material that coats neurons and allows them to signal effectively – were published online and in the October issue of Nature Biotechnology by scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center and the University at Buffalo.

Scientists injected the cells into the brains of mice that were born without the ability to make myelin. Twelve weeks later, the cells had become oligodendrocytes and had coated more than 40 percent of the brain’s neurons with myelin – a four-fold improvement over the team’s previous results published in Cell Stem Cell and Nature Medicine.

“These cells are our best candidates right now for someday helping patients with M.S., or children with fatal hereditary myelin disorders,” said Steven Goldman, M.D., Ph.D., the leader of the team and professor and chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. “These cells migrate more effectively throughout the brain, and they myelinate other cells more quickly and more efficiently than any other cells assessed thus far. Now we finally have a cell type that we think is safe and effective enough to propose for clinical trials.”

The first author and co-corresponding author of the paper is Fraser Sim, Ph.D., assistant professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University at Buffalo, who did much of the work while he was a researcher at Rochester.

Sim and Rochester graduate student Crystal McClain ran extensive analyses looking at gene activity in different types of stem cells, leading to the conclusion that stem cells carrying a protein known as CD140a on their surface seemed to be most likely to become the desired cells – oligodendrocytes.

Stem Cell Research Yields Benefits for Broken Bones

Stem Cell researchers have discovered that a drug for osteoporosis actually has a positive side effect- it can speed up the healing of bone fractures or broken bones by stimulating the patient’s own Adult Stem Cells.

Teriparatide- Now a Stem Cell Drug

The drug is called teriparatide (Forteo) and it is a “fragment of parathyroid hormone that contains 34 amino acids rather than the 84 found in the naturally occurring substance.”

Adult Stem Cell Research Results for Unhealed Bone Fractures

From the stem cell article:

In an observational study of 145 patients with slow-to-heal fractures, 93% had complete recovery within 12 weeks of starting treatment with teriparatide (Forteo), according to Susan Bukata, M.D., of the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y.

Within 12 weeks of starting treatment, 141 of the 145 patients no longer had pain at the fracture site, 135 had radiographic and clinical union of their fractures, and six had partial union of their fractures that clinically functioned as a healed fracture.

Only four had no improvement in pain or fracture union.

93%? Not bad.

Newest Stem Cell Treatment for Blindness

British scientists have reportedly perfected the technique for curing macular-degeneration related blindness with adult stem cells. Returning Hope, a pioneering Asian adult stem cell treatment portal, expects to be one of the first in the world to offer the treatment.

Researchers from the Institute of Ophthalmology at London’s University College used embryonic eye stem cells to replace the layer of damaged eye cells. While Pfizer is backing the British push to bring the therapy to patients, Brian Dardzinski, CEO of Returning Hope, expects that Adult Stem Cell treatments will be available both much sooner and much cheaper in Thailand.

“We have been helping patients with Multiple Sclerosis, autism, brain injury, stroke, ALS and Parkinson’s find treatment in Thailand for some time now. Overseas health care providers have been saying that there are years needed to bring these treatments to patients – we are already helping them get back to a normal life”, said Mr. Dardzinski. “We can already help patients with some eye diseases, and macular degeneration patients will join them very shortly”.
