Researchers in the United States are worried about the fact that there could be an increase in tourism to countries that “assure cures for serious illnesses like Alzheimer’s or multiple sclerosis with the use of stem cells”. From the Ukraine to Mexico, some doctors have said that they have miraculous cures, often using patients recruited on the Internet, without sufficient scientific evidence of their effects.
Jessica Grimm, a 27 year-old quadriplegic traveled from Texas to Costa Rica to try a controversial stem cell cure, which is not yet allowed in the United States.
“I was able to move a few steps, which is something that I had never done. My mother was moved and cried,” said Grimm. For American doctors, it will take months before concrete results are observed, and the progress that she witnessed may have been caused not by the cellular injections, but by the intense physical therapy that she underwent. “I do not know if the success was due to the treatments of the physical therapy, but I understood what I need. Improving my muscular strength with practice, I’m sure that I will improve”.
Laurie Zoloth, the director of the Center for Bioethics, Science, and Society of Northwestern University said that stem cell treatments are not proven to work.
