Dr. Christopher Centeno, a pioneer in stem cell research in Broomfield, Colorado is now treating patients with osteoarthritis, joint pain, knee injuries and non-healing broken bones at his clinic using the patient’s own Adult Stem Cells to repair the damage.

Goodbye Ankle Surgery- Stem Cell Treatment Instead

Hal Kaye, an accountant who loved sports had endured four difficult ankle surgeries trying to repair a damaged arch sustained 15 years ago. The four surgeries had almost crippled him and the last surgery had caused his bone to in his ankle to die due to an artery dying off.

For Hal, an avid golfer, his quality of life had deteriorated. Hal said,”Golf was done in a cart with a handicap flag on the cart with a cane hanging from my golf bag.”

Facing an ankle fusion as a fifth surgery, Hal decided to change things up and try to heal himself using his own Adult Stem Cells implanted by Dr. Centeno.

The coordinator of the health commission of the Federal-Regional government conference, Enrico Rossi, spoke about the statements made by Undersecretary for Healthcare Ferruccio Fazio on the stem cell ban.

“In the Federal-Regional conference, which met on February 26,” said Rossi, Healthcare Councilman of Tuscany, “the agreement on the Employment, Healthcare, and Social Policy Minister’s proposal between the federal government, the regions, and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano for 2008 regarding stem cell research, was ratified unanimously, and in that meeting, there were no requests to modify the text in a technical meeting between the regions and the ministry.” “Therefore, the use of human stem cells is ruled out by law number 40 of 2004.”

Halfway through February the Swiss National Fund instituted a national program for stem cell research and regenerative medicine, providing 10 million Swiss francs (6,766,000 euros) in financing over 5 years. In November, a decision will be made about projects that have been proposed; in January 2010 projects that have been approved could get underway. The objective is to favor basic research into stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, to gain a better understanding of this process internationally.

German Study Discovers Stem Cell ‘Silent’ Reserves

| Share

Andreas Trumpp

Andreas Trumpp and his colleagues from the German Cancer Research Center have recently spoken about a “silent reserve” of stem cells, wondering what type of medical impact the discovery made in Heidelberg of “dormant stem cells” could have.

Usually, dormant bone marrow cells activate and multiply only in a crisis or emergency to react to serious cellular loss due to a virus or hemorrhage. When their work is done, they return to a dormant stage. This withdrawal phase keeps them protected from mutations, cellular toxins, and other dangerous substances, since the cells do not divide and are not subject to modifications or various types of aggressions.

According to the Trumpp group’s discovery, the dormant reserve can even be recruited artificially using alpha interferon proteins, as reported in Nature magazine (10.1038/nature07815).
This is an important result for various reasons. Alpha interferon is the body’s response to viral attacks on cells. Its release can be an intense, sort of SOS for the cell.

Halfway through February, the National Swiss Fund has established a national plan for stem cell research and regenerative medicine, providing 10 million francs (6,766,000 euros) in financing over 5 years. In November, the Foundation will make a decision on projects that have already been submitted. In January 2010, those which have been approved will get underway. The objective is to favor basic biological stem cell and regenerative medicine research, and to spread awareness internationally.

At the end of 2004 in a referendum, Swiss citizens approved a law that allows the use of excess embryonic stem cells from fertility clinics. Researchers assert that regulations, which are too restrictive, do not provide enough embryos for research. In the political world, liberal Senator Felix Gutzwiller is one of the most highly aware the criticisms made by scientists. He is willing to promote further modifications to legislation and to the Constitution, although it is expected that he will meet stiff opposition from ecologists and religious groups.

GREAT BRITAIN – Embryonic Stem Cell to Produce Artificial Organs

Embryonic stem cells (ESC) can survive even when inserted into chains of polymers, in a process in which they are “weaved” into artificial and flexible tissues able to adapt to various types of transplants. In an innovative technique, stem cells could be used in the future to produce artificial organs, say researchers at University College London.

The technique was described in a study, published in Integrative Biology. It implements other research to shape living cells into engineered tissues, including a technique which would print a live tissue using an ink printer, which would substitute normal ink with a biological ink made up of cells.

This technique has already underwent various changes to minimize damage to biological tissue. With this technology it has been possible to ‘weave’ a network of threads containing live brain cells. In this new research, Suwan Jayasinghe and her colleagues have demonstrated that this is possible with a similar technique, to create embryonic stem cell ‘threads’.
